Making a homemade “tier” (tire) for a car depends entirely on what type of vehicle you are building. For toy or RC cars, glue stacked layers of corrugated cardboard together and cut them with a craft knife. For full-sized cars, repairing or aligning tires is highly complex; instead, old car tires can be upcycled into garage or home furniture like seats and tables.
1. Toy or RC Car Tires (Cardboard Method)
Making miniature, functional tires for small DIY projects like model or remote-control cars is highly affordable.
- Measure and Mark: Use a ruler and compass to draw identically sized circles on thick, multi-ply corrugated cardboard.
- Cut Out the Shapes: Carefully cut out your circles using a sharp utility knife.
- Layer and Glue: Stack 3 to 4 cardboard circles on top of each other. Apply heavy-duty wood glue or superglue between the layers and clamp them down until fully dry to create a durable, thick tire.
- Add Treads: Once dry, use the edge of a file or a small cutting tool to etch tread patterns into the flat outer edge for better traction.
2. Upcycling Old Tires (Home & Furniture Method)
If you meant re-purposing old full-sized car tires for home decor (like an ottoman, tire seat, or table), you can easily build one in an afternoon.
- Clean and Prep: Wash the used tire thoroughly with soap, water, and a stiff brush. Allow it to dry completely.
- Wrap with Rope or Fabric: Use a heavy-duty adhesive (like a hot glue gun or construction adhesive) to wrap thick sisal rope or woven fabric around the exterior of the tire until the rubber is completely covered.
- Attach a Top: Cut a circular piece of plywood slightly smaller than the outer diameter of the tire. Mount it to the top. To make a cushioned seat, staple foam and fabric over the top piece of wood before attaching it.
